How this price is measured
- What it measures
- The average export price of fresh/chilled farmed Atlantic salmon shipped from Norway in a single ISO week — a national, all-destinations figure published directly by SSB, not a per-market or per-buyer price.
- Source
- Statistics Norway (SSB), official weekly table 03024 — “Export of salmon, by commodity group and week.” No paid feeds or proprietary data.
- Commodity scope
- The headline is fresh/chilled farmed salmon only — SSB commodity group "fresh or chilled" (internationally HS 0302.14), which is ~97% of weekly export volume. Frozen salmon (HS 0303.13) and the fresh+frozen combined total are tracked separately as secondary figures, switchable via the product picker.
- Price basis
- FOB (free on board): the customs-declared export value at the Norwegian border. It is not a landed, wholesale, or retail price, and excludes freight, insurance, and import duties.
- Currency conversion
- NOK is the canonical price. SSB reports each week in NOK per kg; we convert that week to USD using the average of Norges Bank’s daily NOK/USD reference rates within the same ISO week (period-matched), so a 2021 week is priced at 2021’s rate, not today’s. Week-on-week, year-on-year, and 5-year changes are computed on the NOK price and are therefore FX-independent. EUR and JPY display values use the latest reference rates.
- Cadence
- Weekly. SSB publishes each week’s figures the following Wednesday at 08:00 (Oslo), occasionally a day later in weeks that start with a public holiday. The dashboard shows the actual release date and the next expected one.
- Geography
- Norway → world, all destinations combined. Per-country breakdowns come from a separate monthly customs table and lag the weekly headline by roughly 2–3 weeks.
How it compares to other salmon prices
This page is an FOB export benchmark. Other salmon prices sit elsewhere in the chain and measure different things, so they won't match — here's how they relate.
| Price type | Point in chain | How it relates to this benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Salmon Radar export benchmark (this page) | Border — export (FOB) | The reference figure. A volume-weighted, all-destinations average of customs-declared export value as salmon leaves Norway, reported weekly by SSB in NOK/kg. |
| NASDAQ Salmon Index (NQSALMON) | Spot — export (FCA Oslo) | A weekly spot price for superior fresh gutted salmon, built from prices reported by Norwegian exporters and buyers. Close in spirit to ours, but a transaction survey rather than a customs total — it can lead or lag the realized export average. |
| Fish Pool forward / futures | Financial market | A tradable forward curve for Norwegian salmon used to hedge price risk. It reflects expectations of future spot prices, not value already shipped, so it routinely differs from this week’s realized export figure. |
| Wholesale / landed import price | Wholesale — destination | The price distributors pay after import in markets such as the EU or US. It sits above the FOB benchmark because it adds freight, insurance, and any import duty on top of the border value. |
| Retail shelf price | Retail — consumer | The consumer price in supermarkets. It is typically a multiple of the export benchmark once processing, distribution, and retail margin are added, and moves far more slowly week to week. |
Common questions
Is this a spot price?
No. It is a realized customs export average for the week, derived after shipments clear the border — not a forward or spot quote, and not a tradable contract index like the Fish Pool or NASDAQ Salmon indices. Read it as a benchmark of what salmon actually left Norway at, not as a price you can transact on.
Why does it differ from other salmon prices I see?
Because it measures a different point in the chain. This is an FOB, border-level, all-destinations, volume-weighted weekly average. Spot indices, wholesale quotes, and retail prices each sit further down the chain and add freight, margin, processing, or duty — so they will not match the export figure.
How current is the figure?
Each week’s price reflects shipments from that ISO week, published by SSB a few days after the week closes. The dashboard shows the data’s coverage window, the real SSB release date, and the FX date separately, so you can see exactly how fresh each number is.
